Such beautiful and thick-cut batang fish!
Here at Han Kee on a weekday off-peak timing, yet the queue was still ten-pax long - which is not unexpected, given its short opening hours.
A lady walks down the line to take orders. Two things strike you - her ability to remember orders without jotting anything down, plus her edgy demeanor. Dwell too long on what to order and you may get a ticking off. A request for added vegetables at the last minute was waved away without even a glance at the customer. Apparently, regulars are used to this and has been accepted as the norm when ordering from this stall.
Sliced fish soup comes in 3 sizes - $5, $7 or $9, while fish head costs a dollar more each. Our $5 bowl already had a good quantity of thickly-sliced, fresh-tasting batang fish, which was enough to fill us up.
The soup is light-tasting with minimal condiments. However, it was a little pepperish. Mrs Low found it too spicy for her, so if you prefer something cleaner-tasting like her, you may want to request to hold the pepper.
Just make sure you inform aunty in advance...
