He Ji Hokkien Fried Prawn Mee 和记福建炒虾面

This stall is one of my favourite hokkien mee & sits in an almost vintage-like coffeeshop along Beach Road. The floor tiles, the haphazard layout of the coffeeshop, the flimsy (but functional) oil fumes extractor… perfect in the Kampong Glam area that’s steeped in heritage.

While it also sells a mean char kway teow, the hokkien mee here is undoubtedly the standout dish for me. Each order is fried from scratch using yellow noodles & thin bee hoon with an excellent prawn stock, and the outcome is a flavourfully wet hokkien mee peppered with good wok hei & crispy chunks of pork lard. The seafood is fresh and not overcooked, although pork belly strips are absent. Prices are at $5/$8/$10.

It doesn’t make many Top 10 lists, but if I am in the area, I think I’d pick He Ji over the other 2 bigger names in Golden Mile Food Centre.

Parking is always an issue along this Aliwal Street stretch, so you do need a bit of patience & luck to snare a lot.
