It’s been eons since I last set foot in Newton Food Centre. Here on a weekday, and as I half-expected, the footfall here has dipped considerably due to the travel restrictions. Slightly crowded, but the buzz was nowhere near what I remember it to be.
There are at least 5 stalls here selling oyster omelette, but I had heard so much about Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette 合記炒蠔煎 and was here for it. The stall was initially at Glutton Square in Orchard Road between the mid-60s to late-70s before shifting over to Newton Food Centre in 1971. With a history that stretches more than 50 years, it is no surprise that the stall commands long queues, especially during peak dining hours!
It is impressive how the egg batter can be fried to a crisp at the edges and yet the starchy bits at the centre retain their chewiness. The dish was flavourful - neither bland not overly salty - and the starch that is mixed in was neither gooey nor overly chewy. It was also definitely not as oily as several other stalls. These factors, plus the fact that they are so consistent with their end-product, makes Hup Kee number one in my list.
The $6 portion was the smallest available size - ample enough for two to share (given that you’ll definitely be ordering other dishes there). This portion gives you 12 plump & fresh oysters for you to savour with the accompanying chilli-vinegar dip. There are also bigger portions available at $8 & $10.
