This is probably the worst-kept secret in the bak chor mee circle these days, but yes, Jin Xi Lai (Mui Siong) is a liver-lover's heaven indeed!
If ever you need to satisfy your craving for pig liver, this is the place to go. The thick-cut livers are cooked so well almost every time - it is a feat how it is done so perfectly and consistently. Never hard & rubbery kind of overcooked nor pink & limpy kind of undercooked.
That apart, the mee kia I ordered was doused in a chilli-vinegar sauce with some fried shallots and lard pieces as condiments. Personally, the sauce could have been more fiery, and the noodles could have been done more al-dente. For the noodles, I still prefer the other Mui Siong (Rong Fa).
The soup was nicely cloudy as good bak chor soups should be, and was well-flavoured with the sweetness of the marinated pork. The fishballs, though, were pretty much run-of-the-mill.
Nevertheless, our focus was on the liver, hence we ordered another $4 bowl chock full of livers to fully satisfy our craving. The quantity, considering the fact that they are so thick-cut, was definitely bang for your buck!
Be prepared for a queue of at least 20 minutes (on a good day). There is a buzzer system in place, so you can sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee while waiting!
