Here at Mou Tak Teng, owner Wei Wen is a graduate of Hawker Academy 小贩学院, a televised program where he had the opportunity to hone his bak chor mee skills under the tutelage of the experienced Mr Jimmy from Teo Kee Minced Pork Noodles in Tampines.
Despite the pressure of the media spotlight & a cook-off contest, he emerged victorious and he now helms his very own stall here at Chinatown Food Centre.
I feel he gets most things right - the chilli has heat, the mushrooms are flavourful, and the pork slices & pork liver are fresh & tender. The meatballs & wanton are also given a quick dip in a mini fryer before serving. While it is priced at $4.50, the ingredients are in fact quite plentiful.
But is it really “Mou Tak Teng”? I wouldn’t say it has reached that level yet - for one, I’d prefer it if his noodles could retain more bite. But that leaves room for improvement and hence something to look forward to during my next visit. 😉
Do give Wei Wen some support the next time you are in this food centre! 👌🏻
