Noodle King

Wanton Noodles ($4.50)

Noodle King moved here to Hong Lim from China Square in November 2021, and I have visited them a few times now to try out their fare.

On my first visit, I’d ordered their wanton noodles ($4.50) & added their fried meatballs (2 for $1.50). Boss gave me an extra fried fish dumpling 炸鱼饺 & assured me I would like it.

Fried Fish Dumpling (2 for $1.50)

I did. So much so I came back for multiple visits thereafter. 😂 On subsequent times, I have tried their hor fun ($4.50) and specifically asked to add on their fried fish dumplings (2 for $1.50). Here, they do it in-house from scratch and it is excellent. The interior is nicely-marinated & juicy; there are bits of water chestnuts which creates a layered texture to the bite. As an icing to the cake, they double-fry it to a crisp just before serving. I really like it and strongly recommend this.

The portions for the noodles are pretty generous. The noodles leaned towards the softer side on my first visit, but notably improved on my subsequent visits. I like the sauce though. It is a simple and old-school concoction of soy sauce, lard oil and chilli sauce, and hence very comforting in taste.

Fried Meatball (2 for $1.50)

The fried meat balls (2 for $1.50) have bits of yam and water chestnut mixed within the minced meat, which gave the meat balls an intriguing texture.

Shredded Chicken Hor Fun ($4.50)

I am a person accustomed to stronger flavours, so this style of hor fun isn’t for me. Yet, I can see how this silky-smooth hor fun slathered in a mushroom-based gravy appeals to some others. One thing I’ll definitely return for would be the fried fish dumplings.

I have a soft spot for couples who strike it out together, because I am one half of a pair too. The stakes are arguably higher, and the margin to fail is considerably smaller. The owners, David and Justina, are genuinely nice and sincere during my conversations with them. Business was good at their China Square location, but has yet to really gain traction since their move to Hong Lim. I wish them great success & hope they receive good support from everyone in their new venue here.
