Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle 勝記香菇肉脞面

I was introduced to Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle by a couple of buddies who swore by it. "There's always a queue, but it's totally worth it," said one. "Very addictive one. You will start craving for it," said another.

And so, with such favorable comments at the back of my mind, I made the path less trodden to Serangoon Gardens Market & Food Centre one early Saturday morning. Nestled deep within the Serangoon Gardens enclave, the location is indeed not as conveniently located as many other food centres. When I arrived at 7.30am, which was its slated opening time - there were already 5 in the queue.

The owner of the stall, Mr Lee, has a knack of flicking and tossing bowls in the air whilst preparing the noodles. From the swift and natural way he does it, you can tell it has become a habit after years of practicing this little antic.

But let's shift the focus back to the food. I ordered the mee kia soup since it was the one highly recommended by friends and equally popular among foodies. One spoonful of the soup, and it hits you - the unmistakable aroma of 鳊鱼 (or dried flounder fish)! The fragrance of the soup was so alluring and irresistible, and indeed - as my friend put it, addictive.

That aside, another highlight was the sliced braised mushrooms, which were so well-stewed and delicious. It has been said that the mushrooms are stewed for up to 4 hours, which explains how it can lend so much flavor to this wonderful bowl of noodles.

The noodles were pretty springy even after being immersed in the soup. For me, the noodles did alter the flavor of the soup a little and I would hence prefer to have the dry version so that I can enjoy the actual flavor of the soup to the fullest.
