Mee Siam with wok hei..?

I have never tasted mee siam like this anywhere else. I even had to get my wife to try it too to confirm what I just tasted.

The slightly faded signboard offers a hint of how long Mdm Chen, the chef-owner of the stall, has been running this business. It’s 51 years (and counting), and these days, she sells only mee siam & lontong.

But I’d pick quality over variety, any day.  Besides the smoky bee hoon that must have been well-fried beforehand, the gravy of the mee siam has a good balance of sweet, spicy & tanginess. For $3.50, you get a full egg, bean sprouts, a section of fried omelette (the kind you get from traditional nasi lemak), fishcake, tau kwa, chopped chives and some fried flour cubes (again, something I’ve never had in mee siam anywhere else).

Omelette, Nasi Lemak style

It’s a pretty generous variety of toppings when you compare that to some places which offer an egg & some miserable tau pok puffs for the same price (or even more).

Mdm Chen opens her stall daily - “天天都开,除非洗巴刹”. Her children do not currently have plans to take over the stall, so do give it a try soonest!
