Red Star Restaurant 红星酒家

Okay, so based on my observation, the best timing to come here would be between 8.30am to 9pm 😂

I was here at Red Star Restaurant ( 紅星酒家 ) for some weekend dim sum with the family. Arriving at their opening timing of 8am, we were pleasantly surprised to find tables readily available, without any physical queue. However, the dim sum carts were only pushed out sporadically and some of the food were not yet steamed to optimal temperature.

And by 9am, the tables had filled up quickly leading to a snaking queue outside. So there - 8.30am it is in future then! 😉

I think even the most ardent regulars here would agree that most of the fare here is average at best. Taste-wise, there are certainly better quality dim sum out there at more affordable prices. Most of the fare are rather run-of-the-mill. But still, the nostalgia of push carts, Cantonese-speaking staff in uniform & the round-table restaurant setting is a big draw - especially during the CNY season when family gatherings with older folks are frequent.

For me, the egg tarts, char siew so & steamed yam cakes are must-order items.

The egg custard on the tarts are nicely eggy while the crust is not overly buttery. I do order these to takeaway for friends or relatives when I am in the vicinity.

The char siew so is probably the most aesthetically-pleasing of the lot and legit good. Sweet fillings with a slightly crispy exterior.

The steamed yam cakes had chunks of soft yam cubes and infused with the fragrance of chinese sausages 腊肠 which went perfectly with the savoury soy sauce that came with it.

Their salted egg custard buns were also popular with the kids although a little on the sweet side.

The restaurant was forced to cut ad-hoc and temporary staff when the pandemic was at its peak, due to the dining limits. Happy for them that normalcy (and the crowd) has returned for them.
