Old World Bak Kut Teh Fried Porridge 老世界肉骨茶

Old World Bak Kut Teh has been around since 2019 and has earned a reputation for their fried porridge and, to a lesser extent, their bak kut teh. Based on the menu on display at the stall, they have an impressive array of items, though, and I decided to try out two other items tonight - their Cheesy Seafood Bee Hoon and Large Intestines Braised Mee Sua.

Cheese bee hoon is something of a fusion food where East meets West. The dish was created based on the eatery's own research and development and was launched in January this year.

Cheesy Seafood Bee Hoon, $8

How does it taste? It is somewhat along the line of the Mac & Cheese we are more familiar with, but definitely less creamy and with a more subtle cheese flavor in comparison. I could taste the sweet undertones of the seafood-based broth, with an added fragrance of savoury cheese. There is an umami feel about the gravy, yet not overly cloying.

I have heard from some of those who have tried it that the wok hei is strong. For me, I do not like dishes whereby the wok hei is so overpowering such that every mouthful tastes burnt. Rather, I prefer to be able to taste the original flavors of the dish with just a hint of wok hei. This Cheesy Seafood Bee Hoon I had is exactly like this - which really speaks volumes about the chef's wok skills here.

The accompaniments here include prawns, squids, lala and pork slices, which were sweet and fresh. The drizzle of shallot oil on top right before serving enhanced the flavor of the dish further, though it translated to a sinful sheen of oil at the surface which guilt-tripped me.

Overall, the Cheesy Seafood Bee Hoon was something I enjoyed, although I can understand if it may not appeal to some others as cheese with bee hoon is somewhat of an acquired taste. All in all, this is something which I would highly recommended for you to try at least once!

Large Intestines Braised Mee Sua, $6

Large Intestines Braised Mee Sua was the other dish I tried. Visually, the dish looked pretty legit, with a nice color for its braise, fatty large intestines (though they were thinly-sliced), and topped with the standard but beautiful garnish of coriander leaves and shallot oil. The viscosity of the gravy was on-point too - slightly starchy and not watery. Taste-wise, there was a very subtle hae bee sweetness in every spoonful. The intestines were well-cleaned, soft and tasty - although my grouse was that they were sliced too thinly for me. As for the mee sua itself, it retained its bite in spite of being soaked in the braise. This was a dish which I really enjoyed till the last spoonful.

So there - there is more to Old World than its bak kut teh and fried porridge. I have heard good things about their braised pig's trotters and dry mee sua as well. Those are on my list, stay tuned as I will update this post in due time!
