If you have always been particular about your steaks – which means you are probably one of those who know your high-end steak cuts inside-out, Steakville has to be one of the places you must drop a pin on the next time you want to organize a steak “meat” up with friends.
Steakville opened here back in 2018, and its reputation has been gradually growing among the food community for serving quality cuts of beef at reasonable prices.
Located in a cozy unit within Sunshine Plaza at Bencoolen Street, there is limited seating as there are only about a dozen tables within the small eatery. I visited the place on an off-peak weekday evening and it was still fully-packed, so do remember to make prior reservations like I did.
The Food
The relatively-young owner of the place tries to keep the menu simple and small, so as to upkeep the freshness & quality of the meats. The mainstays are the quartet of Hanger Steak ($26++ for 200g), Ribeye Steak ($28++ for 150g), Curated Aged Steak ($45++ for 150g) and A5 Kagoshima Japanese Wagyu ($60++ for 120g). If you are undecided, you could go for their beef platters, which offer a combination of some of the above-mentioned cuts at a slightly cheaper price.
That being said, they occasionally bring in special cuts of steak from various parts of the world such as Japan, Argentina and New Zealand, though they remain on the menu for a limited time.
The eatery also lists some seafood, chicken and pasta as mains to offer some variety.
Start off your meal with their Hyogo Oysters ($24++ for 6). Hailing from the Hyogo prefecture in Japan, these are flash-frozen to retain their freshness and then thawed to order. They are fleshy & silky-smooth with a wonderfully creamy texture. These were so good, we slurped them up in no time and ordered another half dozen. If you love your oysters, come on Mondays when it’s 50% off with any ala-carte main course ordered.
The Hanger Steak ($26++) is often considered one of the best cuts you’ve never heard of. It’s also called the butcher’s cut, supposedly because it’s the cut that the butcher brings home to his family because of it’s superior quality. It is the area between the rib and the loin that supports the diaphragm and has a beefier flavor.
Made with 100% grain-fed beef from Australia, the slab of meat was pan-seared to medium-rare as we requested, perfectly dark pink on the inside. Tender and succulent with a rich, beefy aroma, the flavors were enhanced by the accompanying sea salt flakes.
In comparison, the Ribeye Steak ($28++) was notably more tender but with a somewhat milder beefy flavor. This section is known for having more intramuscular fat and was mouthwateringly juicy.
If you order any of their platters, they'll torch the meats in front of you right after serving to enhance your dining experience. Do get your phones ready for an insta-worthy shot!
We tried out some of their cocktails since they were at a promotional price of 2 for $28++. Both the Sangria ($19.90++) and Tres Maria ($19.90++) were light and refreshing.
Also, get the Italian Truffle Fries ($14++) - shoestring fries that were showered generous/ly with truffle oil and then topped with a dash of Grana Panado cheese before serving with a truffle mayo dip. It has one of the strongest truffle aromas I’ve come across thus far, so truffle lovers do take note!
These days, you’d be hard-pressed to find places offering good quality steaks pegged at reasonable prices in a casual setting, and Steakville offers exactly all that. While the menu is not extensive, what they do - they do it well. I appreciate that we have this place which strives to source the best steaks from the best farming regions around the world, so that we have the opportunity to try them out.
