Barely a month has passed since the untimely demise of Mr Mohgan, yet here is Mrs Mohgan, toiling tirelessly to earn a living while striving to continue her husband’s hard-earned legacy.
It is, after all, 15 years of hard work to tweak and perfect a recipe that has helped to shoot the stall up to prominence. Today, I am thankful to still be able to enjoy top-notch prata from here after what has happened.
Sometimes, I really do feel that the efforts of our hawkers are under-appreciated .
We arrived at this Joo Chiat Road coffeeshop late morning to find the tables almost completely occupied. Those whose tables were empty were eyeing the flashing number sign just above Mr & Mrs Mohgan's stall, waiting with eager anticipation for their number to be summoned. For the uninitiated, after Mrs Mohgan takes your order, you are assigned a number verbally which you would have to look out for while your order gets prepared by two of Mrs Mohgan's helpers.
The orders clear fast and ours arrive within 15 minutes upon order. Looking at the beautifully-fried discs is a visual treat in itself - but the crispness of their prata kosong ($1.20) here is at another level. It is said that the late Mr Mohgan modelled his recipe after the Chinese doughsticks 油条. Whether it was an added ingredient or a change in method of frying, it is a winning formula.
The egg prata ($1.70) was much less crispier in comparison, but it does offer a contrast in both flavour and texture. For that, I'd recommend getting both the kosong and egg versions.
The kari ikan is thick and flavourful, with some tanginess coming from tomatoes & assam. Each accompanying plate of curry comes with a section of potato. This tangy curry is a perfect complement to quell the grease of the fried dough.
